Special Event Held featuring Disaster Recovery and Local Charm

On November 23, 2024, a talk event was held at the Annex Terrace of the United Nations University Headquarters, focused on disaster recovery and local charm in the Noto region. The Noto Peninsula, recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), suffered significant damage from earthquakes and heavy rain this year. During this event, local producers shared their current situations and efforts towards recovery.

The guest speakers included Mr. Kenji Kamitani from the Okunoto Salt Village, known for preserving the traditional “Agehama-style salt production,” and Ms. Fumiko Tori from Kagetsu, who creates Japanese sweets using local ingredients. Both speakers passionately discussed their determination to protect and support the region’s charm in the face of challenges post-disaster.

The event was moderated by Sayako Koyama, a researcher at the United Nations University OUIK, who guided the discussion on the issues the region faces after the disaster and the support that is currently needed. Kamitani shared the urgent situation stating, “Due to the heavy rain, there are still areas with water supply disruptions, and creating an environment for artisans to return is critical. We would greatly appreciate the assistance of as many people as possible.” He expressed a strong commitment to advancing recovery alongside salt production.

Following the talk, a networking session featured Noto’s special products, including Hatomugi tea, Kagetsu’s “Matsubayashi,” and sweets made with salt from the salt village, allowing participants to enjoy Noto’s delicacies while engaging with the speakers. Kamitani expressed gratitude, stating, “Such exchanges become a significant force in supporting Noto,” while Ms. Tori encouraged attendees by saying, “Please come visit Nanao!” Participants expressed excitement about the prospect of visiting Noto and supporting recovery efforts, creating connections to consider the future of the region.

At the same time, the Farmers’ Market, held on the 23rd and 24th at the United Nations University, showcased local products from Noto, drawing many visitors who had the opportunity to experience the region’s charm firsthand.
