The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve World Conference has previously been held in Minsk (Belarus) in 1984, Seville (Spain) in 1995, and Madrid (Spain) in 2008. The 4th World Conference will take place in Lima, Peru, from March 14 to March 18, 2016.
Held approximately once every ten years, the World Conference will discuss the Lima Action Plan, which outlines the future direction of UNESCO Eco-Parks. Various workshops and side events will report on regional networks and activities from different sites.
Yoshihiko Iida, a researcher from OUIK, will participate and present in the mountain ecosystem session of the themed workshop on March 15, titled “Participatory Conservation Cases Linking Local Stakeholders and International Networks in the Hakusan UNESCO Eco-Park.” Additionally, during the side event on March 16, titled “Synergistic Effects of Multiple Certifications in UNESCO Eco-Parks,” he will discuss the potential synergistic effects between UNESCO Eco-Parks and Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
Moreover, during the 28th International Coordinating Council of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, scheduled for March 18-19, the application for the extension of the Hakusan Eco-Park, supported by OUIK, will be deliberated.
