Orientation held for the “Leader Development Program for the Next Generation 2025″ training course
On June 11, 2025, the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability Ishikawa Kanazawa Operating Unit (UNU-IAS OUIK) hosted an orientation for the “Leadership Development Program for the Next Generation: Changing the World from Kanazawa, Ishikawa 2025 (Youth Empowerment Program) Training Course”
This year, 15 high school students from Ishikawa Prefecture participated in a program aimed at cultivating future leaders to deeply explore regional issues and propose global solutions for a sustainable future, with the orientation marking its official start.
During the orientation, participants introduced themselves, and explanations were given about the overall structure of the program, upcoming schedules, how to conduct the researchers, and the selection process for participating in international conferences such as COP30.
Additionally, Hina Ishijima, a participant from last year’s program, delivered a presentation titled ” Moving Away from a Car-Dependent Society.” Her policy proposals addressing transportation challenges in Kanazawa, along with examples of advanced practices domestically and internationally, served as great inspiration for this year’s participants.
The session was led by Program Coordinator Tomita from UNU-IAS OUIK. She emphasized the importance of staying grounded in the community while connecting globally, and also shared expectations for the program.
Looking ahead, there will be lectures and workshops on themes such as SDGs, climate change, biodiversity, and the Noto region’s reconstruction, to be held from July to August. A Research Presentation event is scheduled for late August.
