In June 2023, OUIK conducted an ecological survey of the Kanazawa Preserved Forest, focusing on six temples and shrines designated within that area as part of the SUN Project. During the survey, we recorded the types, sizes, and density of approximately 4,000 trees, collecting data to assess the current state of carbon sequestration in these areas. Researching carbon sequestration helps visualize how the urban nature of Kanazawa, including its forests, contributes to climate change mitigation.
The survey also revealed social issues such as labor shortages and aging populations among those managing the preservation forests. To address these challenges, OUIK aims to strengthen management systems and promote research activities that involve collaboration between citizens and experts to preserve and protect Kanazawa’s urban nature.
OUIK expresses its gratitude to the following temples and shrines for their cooperation, as well as to the local residents: Noma Shrine, Yasaka Shrine, Yamashina Shrine, Ryuenji Temple, Hiyoshi Shrine, and Oyama Shrine.
OUIK also extends sincere thanks to the experts and students from local academic institutions, including Kanazawa Institute of Technology and the Japanese Society of Landscape Architecture, for their guidance and support during this survey.
