In Kanazawa, which developed as a castle town, there are numerous historic Japanese gardens that promote biodiversity, recreate natural landscapes, and provide us with therapeutic spaces. These gardens require daily maintenance, but many are not being properly cared for due to the aging of their owners and a shortage of skilled workers.
“These gardens are an important part of the city’s natural environment,” says Dr. Juan Pastor Ivars, a researcher at UNU-IAS OUIK. As part of a sustainable urban nature project, he is conducting research aimed at reintroducing nature into urban areas.
This video project aims to raise awareness of the various roles that Japanese gardens play and their connection to the nature and culture of Kanazawa. “I hope that more people will become interested in the urban nature of Kanazawa and participate in our activities,” states Dr. Juan Pastor Ivars.
