The “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) International Study Program,” conducted in collaboration between Ishikawa Prefecture and the UNU-IAS OUIK, is a training program for students to learn about sustainable local development from an international perspective, centered on the “Noto’s Satoyama Satoumi,” which has been designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
Participating students will leverage their knowledge in their field of expertise to propose ideas for regional revitalization and problem-solving. This year, the program will particularly focus on the theme of “Creative Recovery,” aligned with Ishikawa Prefecture’s goals, while exploring the GIAHS designated “Noto Satoyama Satoumi” from an international viewpoint.
<Program Contents>
For the 2025 fiscal year, two courses are offered:
1. Ishikawa Program (Domestic Training): Students will learn about GIAHS through lectures by United Nations University staff and fieldwork in Noto, together developing group proposals. Activity period is expected to be from July to October.
2. Ishikawa & Italy Program (Domestic + Study Visit to Italy): In addition to domestic training, students will visit the FAO headquarters in Italy and GIAHS-designated sites, engaging in discussions with UN staff. The visit to Italy is planned for about one week in September.
<Eligibility>
Students aged 18 to under 30 who are enrolled in institutions of higher education within Ishikawa Prefecture or originating from Ishikawa but studying outside the prefecture (※students from technical colleges must be in their 4th year or above).
