Workshop on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and Resilience Frontiers

2022/09/29

On September 29, 2022, Dr. Juan Pastor-Ivars, a researcher at OUIK, participated in the UNFCCC-Resilience Frontiers brainstorming workshop held in Gaborone, Botswana, from August 22 to 26, alongside 40 participants from around the world.

This event was held concurrently with the Botswana Global Adaptation Week 2022, which saw participation from over 500 attendees, including the esteemed President of Botswana and the Minister of Environment, who actively engaged with workshop participants.

Resilience Frontiers is an initiative of a United Nations agency aimed at “discovering a desirable future of enduring resilience through collective thinking.” To guide us toward this future, Resilience Frontiers has developed eight cross-cutting and comprehensive pathways for transformation. More information can be found at https://resiliencefrontiers.org/

During the five-day intensive course, participants identified proactive actions to accelerate the eight pathways and discussed the underlying visions and values. Following a creative and forward-thinking methodology, participants worked in different groups each day, resulting in the decision to create eight roadmaps and establish follow-up groups.

This event served as an important opportunity to strengthen relationships between OUIK and other UN agencies, particularly with UNFCCC-Resilience Frontiers and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (EHS), led by Prof. Shen Xiaomeng, the Deputy Rector for Europe at the United Nations University, who supported the workshop. Building on the outcomes of this workshop, a Resilience Laboratory is planned for the upcoming COP27 to be held in Egypt.

For Dr. Juan Pastor-Ivars, this was a unique opportunity to approach his research on sustainable urban nature projects in Kanazawa from a new perspective.
